Shape, colour and branch density are not the only things that matter when you choose a Christmas tree. One of the most important questions is the right height. A tree that is too small can get lost in the room, while one that is too big makes the space feel crowded.
So what size suits an average living room? Is 180 cm enough, or does a 210 to 230 cm tree look better? Here is how to find the height that fits your home.
How much space should you leave above the tree?
Always start from the ceiling height of the room.
As a rule of thumb, leave at least 20 to 30 cm between the top of the tree and the ceiling. If you want a tree topper, allow for its height as well.
In an average living room with a ceiling of 250 to 270 cm, for example, a tree of 210 or 230 cm usually looks impressive without filling the room.
Do not look at the centimetres alone, though. The same height can feel completely different in a small room and in a large, open living space.
150 cm: for smaller spaces
A 150 cm tree can be a good choice for:
- a smaller flat,
- a child's room,
- a bedroom,
- a study,
- a hallway,
- or as a second Christmas tree.
Its lower height makes it easy to place, and with the right decoration it creates just as warm a Christmas mood.
If space is tight, you do not have to give up on an impressive tree: in that case the diameter matters at least as much as the height.
180 cm: the classic size
The 180 cm tree is one of the most versatile choices.
For comparison, an average adult man is around 180 cm tall, so this size already gives a proper, classic Christmas tree effect without needing a large room.
It works well for:
- an average sized living room,
- a flat with a lower ceiling,
- a home where space around the tree is limited.
If you are unsure which size to pick, 180 cm is usually a safe starting point.
210 cm: striking but still easy to place
A 210 cm tree becomes a genuine focal point in the living room.
This size looks especially good in rooms with normal or higher ceilings, and it gives you enough surface to decorate richly with baubles, lights and ribbons.
If you want the tree to be the centrepiece of your decoration but do not want something enormous, 210 cm is a very good compromise.
230 to 250 cm: for spacious living rooms
A tree of 230 or 250 cm is genuinely imposing.
It suits:
- a large living room,
- a home with a higher ceiling,
- an open plan kitchen and living space,
- or any place where there is enough free space around the tree.
At these sizes it is particularly important to check the base diameter as well. A taller tree is usually wider too, so measure the area where you plan to put it before you buy.
300 cm: for genuinely special spaces
A 300 cm tree is a spectacle in its own right.
It looks beautiful in a high ceilinged living room, a gallery space, a large entrance hall, or a commercial setting.
With a tree this size, think through in advance:
- the ceiling height,
- the diameter of the tree,
- how much decoration you will need,
- and whether there is enough room to assemble it comfortably.
In the right space, a 300 cm tree creates a stunning, elegant festive mood.
Do not look at height alone
Besides height, three further figures are worth taking into account.
Base diameter: this tells you how much floor the tree takes up. Before you buy, it helps to mark that area on the floor with masking tape.
Number of branch tips: this largely determines how dense and how full the tree looks. Two trees of the same height can look strikingly different.
Shape: a narrow, slim tree fits into a smaller spot, while a wider one looks harmonious only in a larger space.
How to measure the space at home
Before you choose a tree, measure:
- the height available from floor to ceiling,
- subtract the height of the tree topper and the free space you want above it,
- and measure the available width as well.
If your ceiling is 260 cm and you want to leave about 30 cm above the tree, a 230 cm tree is the ideal choice.
Which size is best?
There is no single perfect size for every home.
The right choice is the one that fits the room in proportion, so the tree looks neither too small nor too big.
In short:
- 150 cm: small rooms
- 180 cm: the classic, versatile size
- 210 cm: average and larger living rooms
- 230 to 250 cm: spacious, elegant rooms
- 300 cm: high ceilinged, special spaces
Once the size is settled, all that remains is to find the tree whose shape, colour and density really suit your home.
